Are you a ‘back packer’ when it comes to food shopping? Forced to scour the back of every pack you take from the shelf to make sure it meets the dietary requirements of yourself or someone you’re shopping for?

Just because you or they have a gluten free diet, doesn’t mean you should face a restricted choice when it comes to your weekly food shop, or face endless searches of ‘what foods contain gluten?’ before you hit the aisles. You also shouldn’t be backed into an expensive corner, having to pay premium prices for food stuffs you have little choice but to purchase.

We’ve picked out some of our favourite free from snacks and desserts from our shelves, which are kind on the body and kind on the wallet, too!

Gluten Free Biscuits: Mrs Crimble’s Chocolate Macaroons

Like the Jaffa Cake, there is some debate as to whether a macaroon is indeed a biscuit. The debate isn’t helped by the like-named meringue based confection, the macaron. Wikipedia defines the macaroon as a ‘small biscuit made from ground almonds, coconut and/or other nuts’ which is good enough for us!

These delicious gluten free biscuits are available in either coconut or chocolate flavour at your local SPAR store and the best part is, they are HUGE – 38g per macaroon! The perfect accompaniment to your after-work cuppa, or an after-school pre-dinner treat for the kids.

Something Lighter: Kelkin Chocolate Rice Cakes

Gluten free foods (wheat free too) that taste good, and are good for you. Like Mrs Crimble’s macaroons, these sizeable Kelkin rice cakes are not for the faint hearted, but they’re so light you wouldn’t feel too naughty for eating two at a time. They are available in milk or dark chocolate flavour for when you want that chocolate fix whilst watching the calories and sticking to your gluten free diet. Just 83 calories a rice cake, and are available in a pack of six at your local SPAR store.

A healthy, gluten free start to the day: Alpro Yoghurt Alternatives

Remember the song, ‘how do you like your yoghurt in the morning?’ or was that eggs? Anyway, if you have a gluten intolerance, you’d like your yoghurt in the form of Alpro’s yoghurt alternative.

Not only is this a tasty and nutritious start to your day, but also a great addition to fruit, a pre-gym smoothie or just to try by itself. It’s also pretty clever this plant based stuff, maintaining all the dietary benefits of yoghurt such as being high in calcium and vitamins B12 and D, whilst remaining part of a lactose and gluten free diet.

What’s for dessert? More Alpro gluten free products!

It can be hard to find the right after dinner indulgence when you have a gluten intolerance, but these delicious low in fat, smooth and creamy gluten free desserts from Alpro are a real treat. Like any moose, they melt in the mouth and are available in a range of really tasty flavours such as chocolate, coconut and vanilla.

Don’t go back packing in store, come and visit your local SPAR for some great deals on a fantastic range of tasty and nutritious gluten free foods.
